Mild Electrical Issues

So, I was very very careful checking every piece of electronics I brought over, making sure all things, my computer, ipod, camera, could take the charges thrown at them. All of them were capable. So,Ii bring them and yesterday plug my lap top into my surge protector and then the surge protector into the wall. There are power switches in the panel which is flipped followed by a loud "pop." I rush to turn off the power switch and unplug everything. I had checked everything I had brought except the surge protector which can't take the voltage here. Opps. Luckily no damage done except a surge protector that smells like barbeque.
